Many companies provide messenger software to their employees. With these programs, such as Microsoft Teams, employee apps or other web services, employees can communicate faster and more efficiently than ever before. Everyone knows this from the private sphere, where chats have been intensively shaping our daily lives for years and have permanently changed the way we communicate.

Not all chat is created equal

In terms of security, there are major differences between the providers, especially with regard to end-to-end encryption. If you want to know in detail what this is exactly, this articel is recommended. For everyone else, let's briefly explain: without end-to-end encryption, anyone who has access to the server can simply read all private messages. Just imagine that employees openly write about product developments, marketing strategies, customer or patient data in a chat. This information thus leaves the secure space of the company. Interesting for stock speculators, competitors, blackmailers or data protectionists. Great damage can easily be done here.

Protect your knowledge from unauthorized access

Some providers have recognized this problem. Whatsapp has also been switched to end-to-end encryption. So it's quite simple: make sure to ask your provider if the chat offers a true end-to-end encryption option. But beware: customers are often deliberately misled here with the keyword "transport encryption". This has no effect on what is written above. Transport encryption is standard for websites and protects the data from being viewed by third parties on the way between the sender and the server on which it is stored. Once on the server, however, they are decrypted and stored.  

Use the following checklist to review your chat:

  • There is an option for end-to-end encryption
  • The data is additionally transport encrypted
  • The chat client is accessible only by individual password
  • Passwords are stored hashed
  • Chat histories are not in the app but on the server
